Douglas Neal Mercer, age 73 of Hermitage, passed away March 22, 2015 at the Tennessee Valley Authority VA Medical Center in Nashville.Neal was born April 26, 1941 in Hazard, KY and was the son of the late Charles Edward Mercer and Edna Harrison Combs Mercer.He was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served as a medic. His passion for service and medicine followed him throughout life as he dedicated himself to others.Neal had a love for people and mixed that with his witty humor to keep friends and family laughing. His love was overshadowed only by his compassion and humble spirit. His passion was for his family, especially his precious grandchildren.Of his many talents, Neal will be best remembered for breaking into song at the drop of a hat. In the middle of a conversation a word would spark a tune and he would simply begin singing. His voice will be missed as his family now hears his voice in their thoughts and memories.He is survived by his wife: Vickie Higgins Mercer; a son: Justin Mercer; sister: Mary Wheeler; brother: Charles Mercer; and two grandchildren: Andrew and Emily.With the support of the Patriot Guard, Neal will be conveyed to the Nashville National Cemetery for burial on Thursday, April 2, 2015.
