Garland Rakes

Mr. Garland “Joe” Douglas Rakes, age 81 of Goodlettsville, passed Saturday, May 30, 2015 at his home with his loving children by his side.A native of Nashville, he was the son of the late Troy Venson and Mary Elizabeth Shaw Rakes.Joe was the owner/driver of Checker Cab #8 for over 40 years. Prior to that he owned The Pine Lounge, Sam Davis Lounge and the Circle F Restaurant.He enjoyed fishing, the beach, loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed the horse races, playing cards, good ole country music, the company of women and sitting on his front porch with a good cigar. Joe never knew a stranger and always tried to to help the people he cared about in any way he could.He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Mike & Debbie Rakes, Don & Becky Rakes, Deborah “Mikki” & Tracy Shorter, and Brandon Temple; grandchildren: Danny Rakes, T.J. Shorter, and Michael Drue Rakes; great-grandchild: Forest Rakes; sister: Betty Jean Embry; and brother: Larry Rakes. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.Services will be conducted Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Porter Heights Baptist Church 2329 Carter Ave Nashville, TN 37206 at 4:00 pm.
