George Westover

January 13, 1919 — June 30, 2015

Major George C. Westover, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.), Pearl Harbor Survivor, veteran of Guadalcanal, Guam and Iwo Jima campaigns in WW II, and the Inchon Landing in Korea, retired real estate broker and philanthropist, died June 30, 2015 at the age of 96.Born Jan. 13, 1919 in Wichita, Kansas, Westover enlisted in the Marines Jan. 30, 1940. He was a private first class in the Marine Detachment, USS TENNESSEE (BB 43) and was aboard during the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.He was commissioned second lieutenant Nov. 23, 1942 and later served as a platoon commander at Guadalcanal, Guam and Iwo Jima in WW II; and commanded George Co., 3 rd Battalion, 1 st Marines as a captain at the Inchon Landing in Korea.Westover served in numerous other overseas and stateside assignments prior to his retirement July 31, 1962.He then earned a BS degree in Administration, Sales and Marketing at San Diego State University and enjoyed a successful career in Real Estate in southern California prior to moving to Hermitage, Tenn. in 2010.Westover remained active in the First Marine Division Association, the Marine Corps League, and was a strong supporter of the Music City Young Marines Unit and its Silent Drill Team that was named in his honor; and the Marine Military Academy, Harlingen, Texas until his death.He was preceded in death by his first wife of 63 years, Esther Grace Westover; and stepson, L. Robert Westover.Major Westover is survived by his wife, Lucille Westover, Hermitage; step-daughter, Debra Rohrer, Hermitage; and stepson, Dan Rohrer, Hermitage.A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Mid-TN State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCrory Lane, Nashville, Tenn., with military honors and interment to follow.NASHVILLE FUNERAL AND CREMATION 615-256-1605
