Gerald Carter

Gerald Thomas Carter, age 62, died September 4, 2018 at his home in Nashville, TN. Gerald was born in Nashville on November 30, 1955, which was on his father's 35th birthday. He was the son of the late Thomas Carter and Sarah Elizabeth Carter and the grandson of the late Jesse Reuben Carter and Lona Elizabeth Anderson Carter.He is survived by his daughter: Sarah Jo Carter; and his grandson: Ty Foster. He is also survived by his sister: Judy Carter Caldwell; niece: Jessica Caldwell; great niece: Anna Caldwell, all of Joelton, TN; his aunt: Wilma Carter Morris of Westmoreland, TN; cousins: Jerry Norman Loftin, Nashville TN; Trish Arp, FL; Debbie Webster-Wood, David Carter, Richard Carter, all currently living in Utah; Barbara Cooley, Ashburn, VA; Joni Davidson, Hendersonville, TN; Lori Wold, Madison, TN; Joseph Morris, Madison, TN.He is also survived by his dear friends Bill Stevens, Johnny Kennedy, Sterling Overton, Barry Frist, all of Nashville, TN. They all grew up together and had forged an amazing bond, made of many good times as well as support for each other through life's challenges. The family especially appreciates their support during Gerald's recent illnesses and struggles.Mr. Carter received his bachelor's degree from the University of Miami, FL, attended Middle Tennessee State University, and received his master's degree and plus 30 from Trevecca Nazarene University. He retired in 2017 from teaching in Metro Nashville Public Schools. During his teaching career, he taught at Kirkpatrick Elementary and Overton High School among others. He was an outstanding teacher and athletics coach for almost 30 years, and coached the Overton High School 2010 and 2011 girls softball teams to Division 1, Class AAA Championships, along with many other wins for teams he coached. He was very athletic (loved to play outside) and competed in 1994 and 1996 along with Will Burchett, Richard Eller, Wayne Hester, and Steve Radley where they were the Tennessee Section PGA 1994 Champions.Gerald was full of fun and laughter and music. He especially loved playing guitar, and performed three times at the yearly Smithville Fiddler's Convention and Jamboree. He was also a gifted carpenter and a talented and creative mechanic.A Memorial Celebration of Gerald's life will be held at 3:00 on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Edwin Warner Park, picnic shelter #4.
