Rev. Margaret Herring Howell, born in Creston, Iowa, died on September 25, 2015 at age 80.
Margie is survived by her husband of 59 years: John Floyd Howell; son: John Floyd Howell, Jr; daughter: Leigh Ann Collins (David); brother: David Herring; sister: Mary Jo Coffey; and grandchildren: Rev. John Floyd Howell, III, Rachel Mobley (Clayton), Allison Collins and Caroline Collins.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Francis Herring and Gretchen Donelson; and son: Stephen Donelson Howell.
Margie attended Creston High School and graduated from the University of Iowa. At age 46, she went to Vanderbilt University Divinity School and received her DMV degree. She also received a Masters Degree in Counseling from North Florida University.
She was among the earlier women to be ordained in the Methodist Florida Conference. She served as an associate pastor, then pastor at North Shore UMC and at Faith UMC, all in Jacksonville, FL.
After retiring, she and John moved back to Nashville and rejoined West End UMC. She loved singing in the choir and was asked to serve as minister of Home and Hospital Visitation, which she did until diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
She was a member of the Centennial Club, the No Name Book Club and a Gourmet Cooking Club. She enjoyed tennis, traveling, reading and cooking.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at West End United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Michael Williams. Visitation will be in Reed Hall from 1:00 until 3:00 PM, preceding the service.
