Martha Phipps

June 10, 1926 — July 16, 2018

Martha Mai Keemer Phipps, 92, died peacefully in her sleep July 16. She was born on June 10, 1926, in Paris, Ill., and raised by her mother, Mary Susan Keemer. Mrs. Phipps was preceded in death by her husband, Robert. They had met in 1965 outside a movie theater showing Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawaii." They lived in Illinois and Indiana before moving to Nashville in 1990, and Mr. Phipps died the following year after a long illness. Mrs. Phipps was a friend to all and was well known in the Shelby Avenue and Five Points areas. At Christmas, she would hand deliver cards at businesses, fire halls, the local community center, and her church. She looked out for others, often running errands for "the old people" in her apartment complex. She loved animals, jigsaw puzzles, Westerns, sodas, down-home cooking, country and gospel music, and being with other people. She attended the state fair for many years. Survivors include a close group of devoted friends. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 26, at East End United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Phipps' memory to East End United Methodist Church or to the Nashville Humane Association.
