Michael Braithwaite

October 4, 1953 — February 19, 2017

Michael "Mickey" Braithwaite died in his Nashville home on Sunday, Feb 19, 2017, surrounded by his wife and children. He was 63. Mickey was born on October 4, 1953, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Jay and Elizabeth "Betty" Braithwaite. Born with a playful spirit, an inventor's mind, and a lion's heart, he spent much of his childhood playing and exploring the natural world with his younger sister and best friend Elizabeth. His family moved to Nashville in 1966, and as a "city kid," Mickey spent his teen years restoring his first classic Italian sports car, building a telescope, and developing an early interest in design. His first job was designing Yellow Pages ads at L.M. Berry, before learning typesetting with D&T Typesetters, and eventually joining the design team at Thomas Ryan Design, where he transformed his craft into an art and a passion. He started his own graphic design business, Braithwaite Communications, in 1986. During his 30-year business, Mickey worked with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Capitol Records, MCA Records, and many others. His work with Nashville's music industry resulted in projects with Reba McEntire, George Jones, and Conway Twitty, and helped cement his position within the City's rapidly evolving design community. But it was his commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and respect that helped him build a close-knit community of friends and colleagues-all of whom remember him for his work ethic, but also his love of pranks. Though he was an agnostic, he knew that we humans don't have the slightest grasp on what's possible-and that's what makes existence so wonderful. He left this world as he lived: authentically, in the present, and with so much love. He is survived by his wife Isabel Braithwaite, daughter Michael Braithwaite, son Adric Braithwaite, sister Elizabeth Caldwell, and brother-in-law Kyle Caldwell. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Feb 28, 2017, from 3:30-7PM at Dyer Observatory in Brentwood, TN. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Friends of Warner Parks .
