Nancy Powers

Nancy Powers, age 83, died on Saturday, March 28, 2015.She was born on February 13, 1932 in Albany, NY. Nancy graduated from St. Agnes Preparatory School in 1949 and left Albany for Duke University. After transferring, she received her BA in French from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1956. She completed her MA in English at the University of Texas at Austin in 1958 and later completed all coursework for her PhD in English at The University of Texas at Austin.Nancy's teaching career began in Texas while she was in Graduate School at the University of Texas in 1957. She had a brief tenure in Missouri before coming to the University of North Alabama in 1965. After a memorable career at UNA, she retired as an Associate Professor of English in 1994.Her pet peeve was poor grammar. Developed over 38 years of teaching English literature to college students, she was always a stickler about proper grammar and would correct students, waiters and everyone else about the correct use of the English language.Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, John Powers of Florence, Alabama, her father, Lou Keister of Roanoke, Virginia, her mother, Betsy Wells Keister of Memphis, Tennessee and her brother, Lee Keister of Round Rock, Texas.Nancy is survived by her son Chris Powers, daughter in-law Lena Powers, grandchildren Bryant, Tucker, Morgan and Bryce Powers all of Brentwood, her brother and sister in-law Bob and Judy Sandercock of Winston Salem, North Carolina, nephews Judge John Sandercock of New York City, NY and Steve (Tara) Sandercock of Tarboro, North Carolina, niece Ann (John) Sandercock Metcalf and sister in-law Esther Keister of Round Rock, Texas.A visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 at the Chapel at Brentwood United Methodist Church.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at: http://jdrf.org .NASHVILLE FUNERAL AND CREMATION 615-256-1605NASHVILLE FUNERAL AND CREMATION
