Paul Gomez

February 9, 1938 — May 25, 2019

Dr. Paul Charles William Gomez, our beloved husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and pediatrician, passed away in peace on May 25, 2019. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dinorah Bado Gomez, and father, Charles William Gomez. He is survived by his wife, Catherine "Kitty" Gomez; sister, Maureen (Gregory) Ramos; daughter, Germaine Gomez; sons, Sean (Mandy) Gomez, Michael (Trish) Gomez, Julian Gomez, Anthony (Stefanie) Gomez; thirteen grandchildren, Leanna, Catherine, Kristina, Ridley, Leo, Bella, Matthew, Charlie, Nick, Grace, Haydrien, Maxime and Marc; and five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Tonico, Michael, Hailey and Hunter. After graduating from Prior Park College in 1957, Paul earned his medical degree from St. Thomas Hospital Medical School at the University of London in 1963, and he became a registered pediatric medical practitioner in 1964. Also in the same year, Paul married his sweetheart, Catherine "Kitty" Kenny, a nurse he met at Stamford Hospital, and they soon started a family. Paul was a brilliant pediatrician and he loved caring for his patients. He was also creative and resourceful, and he used his talents to invent the Derbshire Oxygen Chair – a lifesaving device for premature children whose lungs aren't fully developed. Paul's invention has saved a countless number of premies worldwide and is still being used today. Always an adventurous spirit, Paul moved his young family to Kampala, in Uganda, Africa, where he studied tropical medicine and cared for the children of local tribes. When dictator, Idi Amin "Dada" took over the government, Paul moved his family to Nashville in 1971 (sight unseen), where he worked for Vanderbilt Hospital. Soon after, he opened his private practice and tragically contracted Encephalitis in 1975. Despite pulling through the illness, Paul developed Parkinson's Disease as a result but worked tirelessly until his retirement in 1986. Paul was a devout Catholic and God's faithful servant throughout his life. He accepted his illness without complaint and he used it to inspire others. He is at peace now and is no doubt with our Father in Heaven. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 30th at St Matthew Catholic Church, 533 Sneed Road, Franklin, TN.
