Mrs. Vernell Brooks Killough, age 93, was born in Alcorn County, Mississippi to Howard and Lottie Jones Brooks. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband John F. Killough, Jr.; her sister Fredra Wilbanks, and her brothers Truit Brooks and Billy Brooks.She is survived by her son Jerry Killough (Dale) of Franklin, Tennessee; daughter Dr. Peggy Killough of Nashville, Tennessee; granddaughter Brooks Killough Kidd (David)of Franklin; grandson Lee Killough of California; great-granddaughters Darby Killough, Zoe Kidd and Avery Kidd.Mrs. Killough graduated from Kossuth High School, Kossuth, Mississippi where she was on the varsity women's basketball team. She attended Blue Mountain College. She worked at the Milan Arsenal as Assistant Building Forewoman and also played on the arsenal women's softball team. She served as Tennessee State President of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the National Association of Letter Carriers.Mrs. Killough served a long career in health care as pediatric nurse for Dr. Walton Harrison at the Children's Clinic in Jackson, Tennessee. She was a registered nurse, earning the Associate of Arts Degree in Nursing from Union University. Following her retirement from the clinic she worked in home health care for a number of years and received an Employee of the Year Award.She was an active member of Browns United Methodist Church. After her husband's death, she moved to Nashville to be near her children. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and especially enjoyed many trips to Colorado. She also enjoyed her trips to Russia, China, Ireland and other international destinations with family and friends.A Celebration of Life will be held at Browns United Methodist Church in Jackson, Tennessee on Saturday, May 28, 2016 with Reverend Steven J. Callicoatt officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Browns Church Fellowship Hall with a Celebration of Life following at 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. If you wish, memorials may be made to the Browns United Methodist Church Building Fund, 181 McLeary Road, Jackson, TN 38305.
